Efficient: adj. 2a. Acting or producing effectively with a minimum of waste, expense, or unnecessary effort.

“Efficiency” has been the buzz word of late in official discussions about the TTC.

I first noticed it in the TTC’s proposed 2014 operating budget document. A few days later I was at the TTC board meeting in order to depute on this budget and heard the TTC commissioners repeat this same word as an accomplishment and a primary concern.  I was a bit surprised at this emphasis on “efficiency”; here I thought that we would have a discussion about how to get the things that are more important to me as a TTC rider and a Torontonian, such as whether the TTC will help Torontonians get around more easily or quickly next year (the operating budget document helps answer that question, and the answer is basically “no”).

TTCriders has their say in the Toronto Star's article on how we're going to pay to fix gridlock.

This article appeared in the business section of the Toronto Star on December the 7th, 2013.

It’s 9 a.m. on a recent Thursday and Union Station has just disgorged the last of the morning rush hour. Business executives, students, office workers all squeeze and jostle for space as they navigate the narrow passage between Union Station and Toronto’s subway system.

680 News did a comprehensive summary of the deputations by Torontonians on the City Budget process, including mentioning the concerns of some of our members and supporters.   TTCriders is calling on the City to contribute more to the TTC.    Thanks to all of those who came out.

TTCriders filled the room and spoke to the TTC budget, after a long delay.

The TTC board will reconvene for a special budget meeting Wednesday after the critical financial decision about a New Year's fare hike was derailed Monday by the special city council meeting to deal with Mayor Rob Ford's powers.

Fare hikes and status-quo bad service are in store for TTC users next year, unless we do something about it.

Nearly 50 TTC users waited nearly three hours to speak to the TTC budget at City Hall yesterday.  The TTC commission meeting was delayed by a special council meeting to strip Rob Ford of his mayoral powers.   Check out the photos below.

Young people I talk to constantly complain about long commutes on the TTC from UofT Scarborough Campus to downtown or from Finch Ave West to Scarborough. A few years ago one colleague of mine gave the TTC a sad acronym: Take The Car. Dozens more I’ve talked to say they just can’t afford to take the TTC when they need to and have to prioritize their trips.

The TTC 2014 budget was just approved by the TTC Commission.

Unless we act quickly, riders will pay more for the same inadequate and overcrowded service.

The TTC Commission approved a five-cent increase on fares, and a five-dollar increase on the price of an adult Metropass (from $128 to $133.75).  Cash fares will stay at $3.00, and service levels will stay the same.
