Bus lanes now

Is your commute slow and unreliable? Buses and streetcars are spending more time in traffic as congestion worsens. This means being late for school, work, appointments and more.

Transit should be reliable, frequent, and fast. Toronto has a plan to get buses and streetcars moving with transit-only lanes and other measures, called RapidTO. But progress has been slow.

Your voice is needed to convince City Councillors to speed up TTC with transit priority measures! More transit-only lanes will increase ridership, reduce crowding, and help Toronto meet our 2040 Net Zero targets.

Where is Toronto planning to prioritize transit?

So far, only one RapidTO bus lane has been implemented on Eglinton East, Kingston, and Morningside. A bus lane on Jane Street was supposed to be installed in 2021. The next routes under consideration are Finch East, Dufferin, and Lawrence East.

We advocated for more bus priority measures ahead of the FIFA Men's World Cup in 2026, and secured a motion from City Councillors to implement transit-only lanes on Bathurst and Dufferin before 2026.

The following transit-only lanes were planned in 2020, but have been delayed:

Do red lanes work?

Transit priority means more than just red paint: Measures like red transit-only lanes, signal priority at traffic lights, and “queue-jump lanes” can help get buses and streetcars moving, in cheap and easy ways.

Red bus-only lanes and other measures implemented on Eglinton Avenue East, Kingston Road and Morningside Avenue in 2020 saved transit riders an average of 11 minutes per day and improved reliability by 12% when compared to 2019.

A bold RapidTO plan will mean:

  • Faster trips
  • More reliable transit
  • Less pollution and congestion on city streets
  • Unlocking more transit service across the city

The good news is that 12 City Councillors and Mayor Olivia Chow made commitments before the last election to implement 10 bus and streetcar priority corridors in this Council term.

Now it's time to ask them to keep their promise to transit users!
