The plans that City Planning is proposing for the subway extension do not match the plans for Scarborough Centre (also from City Planning)

What is the plan for Scarborough Centre? This seems like a simple question, but it is one that has us confused. Very confused.

On the one hand, a one-stop subway extension is included as part of the proposed Scarborough Rapid Transit Network because it “Supports the development of Scarborough Centre as a vibrant regional urban centre.” Those of us using Scarborough Centre station on the RT today look out at the fields of parking surrounding the mall and Civic Centre can be excused for thinking that the plan is to re-purpose those lots into the type of place you would want to ride transit to, i.e., a vibrant urban centre.

Take action: Don’t hike fares on the subway

“It used to take me 30 minutes to ride the subway to school, but since Metrolinx hiked fares on the Spadina line, I can’t afford it.  Now I ride two crowded buses and a streetcar to get to school, and it takes me an hour and a half.”  TTC rider, Suhail Barot.

What do we think of the federal government's latest transit funding announcement

On May 6, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Greenwood station and announced the federal government is contributing $840 million over three years to the TTC.

This is good news because the TTC needs the money.   The TTC has $2.8 billion in unfunded capital projects it has to complete in the next 10 years just to keep the TTC in a state of good repair.  All while building a much needed new bus garage in Scarborough, and continuing to make the TTC more accessible by installing elevators at every subway station.

Over a year ago the City, in response to our pressure, agreed to come up with a plan to make the TTC more affordable for low income riders.  Now the report is returning to City Hall.

This is our chance to get free fares for people on social assistance, and $50 fares for people on low incomes.
