Transit News

Three years ago, Toronto City Council broke its own procedures and opted to scrap a fully funded rapid transit line. If not for this egregious mistake, a 7-Stop Scarborough LRT from Kennedy through Scarborough Centre to Malvern would be under construction now.

(When we initially wrote this post we believed the Councillor Karygiannis was merely a destructive voice yelling from the margins. We have since learned that politics have transpired to make his mistaken and problematic voice relevant. We have updated the post to provide more details about the options that Councillor Karygiannis is supporting)

A group of us from Scarborough Transit Action spoke at the #ExecComm meeting on June 28th. Our demand for an LRT network instead of the One Stop Extension triggered an overwhelmingly negative response from Mayor Tory and his allies. The most absurd being Councillor De Baeremaeker’s claim that any opposition to this project constituted a “wall of hate” toward Scarborough.

In Friday's edition of The Globe and Mail, it was revealed that the Scarborough subway costs are expected to rise by $900 million to $2.9 billion.

The $900 million additional cost estimate for the Scarborough Subway Extension (SSE) proves once again, an LRT network is, by far, the best choice for Scarborough transit riders.

From the TTCriders Scarborough Committee

What is the plan for Scarborough Centre? This seems like a simple question, but it is one that has us confused. Very confused.

On the one hand, a one-stop subway extension is included as part of the proposed Scarborough Rapid Transit Network because it “Supports the development of Scarborough Centre as a vibrant regional urban centre.” Those of us using Scarborough Centre station on the RT today look out at the fields of parking surrounding the mall and Civic Centre can be excused for thinking that the plan is to re-purpose those lots into the type of place you would want to ride transit to, i.e., a vibrant urban centre.
