“Expand access and TTC service, not policing”: Transit user group slams fare increase, police expansion, possible cuts

January 4, 2023 (Toronto, ON) —TTCriders, a membership organization of transit users in Toronto, released the following statement in response to Mayor John Tory’s announcement about the 2023 TTC Budget, which has not yet been published publicly:

Thirteen (13) of the twenty-five (25) newly elected Toronto City Councillors on October 24, 2022 completed a TTCriders survey on transit issues before the election. All 13 of the Councillors have committed to oppose cuts to service if the TTC faces continued budget shortfalls. Read their full survey responses.

TTCriders opinion column in the Toronto Star, explaining why volunteers painted an unsanctioned bus lane on Dufferin Street and why voters should pick transit champions on October 24, 2022.

Derek Song responds to a recent Scarborough Mirror article about road safety in which incumbent councillor Cynthia Lai ruled out adding protected pedestrian crossings at bus stops, as proposed by challenger Jamaal Myers. But her claim that the City of Toronto is moving mid-block TTC stops on arterials near signalized intersections doesn’t capture the full story.

Global News reports on the pop-up bus lane installed by volunteers on Dufferin Street. "Transit advocates are demanding candidates commit to an expansion of the city’s rapid bus corridors. While experts agree expanding surface networks would be an affordable and quick way of delivering transit priorities, the mayoral frontrunner says it’s not so easy."
