Community marches along cancelled LRT route, days before Bill 107 vote
Residents marched from Malvern to protest Eglinton East LRT cancellation and Bill 107
May 25, 2019 (Toronto, ON) – Forty Scarborough residents marched from Malvern Town Centre to MPP Vijay Thanigasalam’s office to protest Bill 107 and the cancellation of the Eglinton East LRT. Bill 107 gives the Province the authority to prohibit Toronto from advancing rapid transit projects, and the ability to take over TTC assets without compensation. Premier Ford promised to build Eglinton East LRT, but it is not included on the latest provincial transit map.
“Scarborough MPPs must put Eglinton East LRT back on the map, and keep transit publicly owned, operated, and maintained by the TTC,” said Shelagh Pizey-Allen, one of the march co-organizers. “Cancelling Toronto’s transit projects and cutting $1.1 billion to TTC means more delays.”
Premier Ford promised to build the Eglinton East LRT during the 2018 provincial election campaign, but the Eglinton East does not appear on the provincial transit map unveiled on ___. The province’s plan to add two stops to the Scarborough subway extension will delay the subway opening to 2029 at the earliest. The Scarborough RT is set to be decommissioned in 2026, which would leave residents commuting by bus for at least three years.
“Provincial transit takeover Bill 107 will delay the transit connections we need in Scarborough,” said march co-organizer Brenda Thompson. “Premier Ford must reverse the TTC funding cuts and keep his promise to Scarborough residents by building the Eglinton East LRT to Malvern with the TTC.”
Residents marched from Malvern Town Centre, the terminal point of the Eglinton East LRT, along the LRT route to MPP Vijay Thanigasalam’s office to deliver a letter.
