#OurSubway campaign blitzes 35 subway stations

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

#OurSubway campaign blitzes 35 subway stations

Friday February 22 (Toronto, ON) – This morning, transit advocacy group TTCriders and allied organizations distributed tens of thousands of flyers opposing the province’s subway takeover. Hundreds of volunteers took part in the coordinated the city-wide day of action at 35 TTC stops simultaneously.

The flyers urge commuters to contact their MPPs to stop the subway takeover. Transit advocates, Toronto City Councillors, and civic organizations are raising the alarm that the provincial government’s plan will delay new transit, let the subway system fall into disrepair, and will open the door to privatization, less say for residents, and higher fares.

QUOTES:

“I volunteered today because Scarborough transit riders shouldn't be dealing with delays and extended wait times. We need our MPPS to fund transit properly, not take it away or cause more disrepair.”

– Candice Leung, TTCriders (distributed flyers at Kennedy Station)

“The only way to fix delays and make transit more affordable is to fund it properly. We told thousands of transit riders in Scarborough today to contact their MPPs and tell them to fund transit, not delay it by stealing the subway.”

– Brenda Thompson, Scarborough Transit Action (Kennedy Stationn)

“We need to put the brakes on the province's plan to steal our subway. It’s outrageous that our MPPs plan to let the TTC subways fall into disrepair. The TTC needs $1 billion per year in subway maintenance, but the province will only provide $160 million.”

– Mike Sullivan, TTCriders (distributed flyers at Dundas West Station)

“The province’s plan will be a disaster for TTC riders. The TTC is the least-funded transit system in North America. It needs proper funding, not more chaos and delays.”

Kingsley Kwok, TTCriders (distributed flyers at Wellesley Station)
