Accessibility

Will candidates commit to a transit system accessible to all?

A truly accessible transit system means more than being able to board a bus, streetcar or subway. Riders need to be able to navigate the system, understand where they are going, safely get to and from their stop, and rely on door-to-door service when conventional transit cannot meet their needs.

For too many riders, these barriers can make taking transit more difficult, stressful, or sometimes impossible. Confusing or inconsistent signage can make the TTC harder to navigate, particularly for riders with disabilities, seniors, tourists and people who are unfamiliar with the system. For Wheel-Trans users, reliable door-to-door service can be essential to getting to work, medical appointments, school and other parts of daily life.

Over the next four years, Toronto needs to make the TTC easier to use for everyone. That means fully implementing the TTC's wayfinding strategy, protecting and expanding door-to-door Wheel-Trans service for those who need it, and ensuring accessibility is prioritized during snowstorms and other disruptions. Here's what we asked candidates:

Some candidates offered extra comments about their position on TTC accessibility:

"Transit must be accessible and safe for everyone, including people with disabilities, seniors and residents with mobility challenges. I support improving signage and wayfinding throughout the TTC, protecting and expanding reliable door-to-door Wheel-Trans service, and ensuring bus, streetcar and Wheel-Trans stops are cleared promptly after snowstorms. Accessibility should be built into transit planning and infrastructure from the beginning, rather than treated as an afterthought. I would also support meaningful consultation with people with disabilities to identify barriers and improve the transit experience."

I’ve already been doing accessibility audits with people who use mobility devices on the TTC, and I’m committed to doing even more accessibility audits with TTC riders of every age and ability to make sure our public transit is accessible to all. To build an inclusive transit system, it’s important that transit planning and design happens in close collaboration with people from the disability community, not just to check a box.

I am committed to advancing accessibility across Toronto’s transit system, but again, much of this is conditional with outcomes depend on operational decisions, resource availability, and provincial standards. Protecting Wheel‑Trans service, improving transit stop accessibility during winter, and ensuring reliable support for riders with disabilities all require coordinated action from multiple City divisions, the TTC, contracted service providers, and other governments. I will champion policies and investments that strengthen accessible travel, reduce barriers, and improve safety for riders who rely on specialized services. My commitments must be on what is realistically achievable within the City’s authority, budget, and operational capacity. My approach is to support accessibility improvements that can be delivered responsibly and sustainably, while advocating for the funding and coordination needed to meet the long‑term needs of residents who depend on accessible transit.
