Accessibility

Will candidates commit to a transit system accessible to all?

A truly accessible transit system means more than being able to board a bus, streetcar or subway. Riders need to be able to navigate the system, understand where they are going, safely get to and from their stop, and rely on door-to-door service when conventional transit cannot meet their needs.

For too many riders, these barriers can make taking transit more difficult, stressful, or sometimes impossible. Confusing or inconsistent signage can make the TTC harder to navigate, particularly for riders with disabilities, seniors, tourists and people who are unfamiliar with the system. For Wheel-Trans users, reliable door-to-door service can be essential to getting to work, medical appointments, school and other parts of daily life.

Over the next four years, Toronto needs to make the TTC easier to use for everyone. That means fully implementing the TTC's wayfinding strategy, protecting and expanding door-to-door Wheel-Trans service for those who need it, and ensuring accessibility is prioritized during snowstorms and other disruptions. Here's what we asked candidates:

Some candidates offered extra comments about their position on TTC accessibility:

Accessibility must be treated as a core part of our transit system, not an afterthought. I support continued investment in making TTC stations, vehicles and stops accessible and ensuring Wheel-Trans provides reliable, dignified service for those who depend on it. Accessibility also extends beyond the vehicle itself sidewalks, pathways and transit stops must remain safe and usable year-round. That includes prioritizing timely snow and ice removal at Wheel-Trans, bus and streetcar stops. In Etobicoke North, I will advocate for accessibility improvements that allow seniors, people with disabilities and residents with mobility challenges to travel safely, independently and with confidence.

Improve wayfinding: Fully fund the TTC’s 10-year strategy for clearer signs, maps, announcements and digital information. Test changes with riders with disabilities, seniors and people unfamiliar with the system.
Protect Wheel-Trans: Maintain reliable door-to-door service for riders who need it and address booking problems, long waits, missed trips and eligibility concerns. Expand service where demand shows a gap.
Keep winter travel accessible: Clear snow piles promptly at Wheel-Trans pickup and drop-off points, as well as paths to stops, crossings and stations. Give riders a clear way to report urgent barriers.

"Accessibility is infrastructure, not an afterthought. Clear wayfinding, reliable Wheel-Trans and accessible stops are basic service standards. After snowstorms, a bus or Wheel-Trans stop that a wheelchair user cannot reach is not an accessible stop. I support measurable snow-clearing response standards and transparent tracking so residents know when accessibility problems will actually be resolved. Stay aligned!"

"Accessibility should be built into every part of the TTC, not treated as an afterthought. I support continued improvements to station accessibility, elevators, buses, stops, wayfinding, and real-time information so that seniors, people with disabilities, and riders with mobility challenges can travel safely and independently.

I also believe reliability matters just as much as infrastructure. An accessible elevator or route is only useful if it is working when people need it, so maintenance, clear communication during outages, and timely repairs should remain a priority.
