Accessibility

Will candidates commit to a transit system accessible to all?

A truly accessible transit system means more than being able to board a bus, streetcar or subway. Riders need to be able to navigate the system, understand where they are going, safely get to and from their stop, and rely on door-to-door service when conventional transit cannot meet their needs.

For too many riders, these barriers can make taking transit more difficult, stressful, or sometimes impossible. Confusing or inconsistent signage can make the TTC harder to navigate, particularly for riders with disabilities, seniors, tourists and people who are unfamiliar with the system. For Wheel-Trans users, reliable door-to-door service can be essential to getting to work, medical appointments, school and other parts of daily life.

Over the next four years, Toronto needs to make the TTC easier to use for everyone. That means fully implementing the TTC's wayfinding strategy, protecting and expanding door-to-door Wheel-Trans service for those who need it, and ensuring accessibility is prioritized during snowstorms and other disruptions. Some candidates offered extra comments about their position on TTC accessibility:

"Public transit by TTC is an essential services for some community members who have accessibility needs, and it's imperative that we support access and usage."

"I am not in favour of the 2026.TTC15.4 "Indigenous Wayfinding Bill" (assuming it is pertinent to accessibility for the purposes of this survey), and I will not be supporting its implementation if elected as Councillor."

"I would like to add a message or notice for passengers to be aware when turns or sudden movements happen. I have received a concussion, as well as my elder volunteer on a different trip, due to the sudden movements on streetcars as drivers don't notice when disabled people sit."

"Wheel-Trans’ Family of Services model should never assign someone a trip they cannot safely or reliably complete. I will push the TTC to review its eligibility and trip-planning rules so each rider’s needs and the accessibility of the full journey are properly considered. Accessibility also depends on elevators people can count on, with planned replacements before equipment fails and faster repairs. Diversion maps must be much easier to read and clearly show accessible alternatives when a route or station is disrupted."

"As a person with a disability who relies on the TTC, I know there is no such thing as partial accessibility. I am committed to 100 percent network accessibility. True accessibility is end to end. Beyond station elevators and legible wayfinding, it requires aggressive winter maintenance so riders with mobility devices are not stranded by windrows at stops. Wheel-Trans door to door capacity must be fully protected and expanded to meet growing demographic need, rather than rationed through restrictive eligibility models."
