Affordability

Will candidates commit to making life affordable for transit riders?

Torontonians are experiencing an affordability crisis due to international situations out of their control, and the City must do everything it can to make life more affordable. Riders tell us again and again that the costs of taking transit pile up, leaving them with expensive decisions on whether taking transit is financially sustainable.

For some, budgeting for transit can mean being late on rent, missing class, burning out on extra shifts, purchasing less food, or avoiding transit altogether to save on costs. For 30 years, fare increases has been vastly higher than the rate of inflation. On top of that, Torontonians cannot afford any increase in fares. In fact, the TTC's own report says that even a $0.10 fare increase would result in ~500,000 fewer rides being taken. A $1.10 fare increase would result in ~31 million fewer rides every year.

If we want people to keep using the TTC, riders need to see it as the most cost-effective way to get around Toronto. That's why maintaining a fare freeze and lowering the fare cap for all, and deepening affordability for lower-income riders is crucial over the next four years as we face more and more economic uncertainty. Here's what we asked candidates:

Some candidates offered extra comments about their position on TTC affordability:

"In a city with our traffic congestion anyone tacking tramsit is doing the city a net good. Our goal should be making sure that the TTC is always the most affordable option when wayfinding downtown."

"improving affordability should not come at the expense of service quality. Efforts to make transit more affordable should be accompanied by a continuous review of operations to identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce unnecessary costs, and make the best use of available resources. This can help create room in the budget while maintaining reliable, safe, and high-quality service for riders.

As a CPA, CA with a background in audit, finance, and compliance, I bring relevant experience to City Hall’s budgeting and oversight processes. Combined with my 9 years of experience in TTC and an understanding of TTC operations, this experience would allow me to take a detailed, evidence-based approach to identifying opportunities for greater efficiency, stronger financial accountability, and better use of public funds.

We recognize that some of the topics outlined above fall outside the direct jurisdiction of a Ward 11 Councillor or extend beyond transit policy.
"

"Affordable transit helps people get to work, school, appointments and the services they need. I support maintaining the fare freeze and lowering the monthly fare cap to 40 rides or fewer, while exploring weekly capping so savings are available sooner. I would work with colleges, universities and student unions on affordable options that reflect students' different schedules and circumstances. I would also support a funded plan to complete the Fair Pass expansion, with clear timelines, simpler applications and better outreach to eligible residents. These measures must be backed by sustainable public funding that protects frequent, reliable service. Affordability and service quality need to improve together."

"Post secondary should be free if possible"
