Transit Riders Celebrate Progress on Bathurst and Dufferin Dedicated Transit Lanes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 16, 2025

Toronto, ON — TTCriders, a membership-based transit advocacy organization, is celebrating a victory today as, after hearing a marathon six hours of speakers, with most voicing support on the issue, the Executive Committee approved RapidTO dedicated transit lanes on Bathurst and Dufferin Streets. This would not have been possible without transit riders standing up and speaking in favour of this common-sense solution.

“This is a win for transit riders,,” said Andrew Pulsifer, Executive Director of TTCriders. “Transit users, nearby residents and local workers spoke up and declared they want dedicated lanes. They will make buses faster and more reliable for thousands of people. We’re pleased that Mayor Chow’s amendment commits to clear timelines extending these lanes further north, fulfilling commitments made by her and other members of the Executive.”

Bathurst and Dufferin are two of the busiest bus corridors in the city, with over 75,000 daily riders. Both were identified as priority routes for RapidTO implementation when the plan was first announced in 2019. Despite that, City staff recommended against extending the lanes north of Bloor.

Mayor Chow proposed an amendment reaffirming support for these lanes north of Bloor, up to Eglinton on Bathurst and up to Wilson on Dufferin, asking staff, Councillors, transit users, business owners and other impacted stakeholders to work together on implementation.

With Toronto set to host the FIFA World Cup in 2026, the need for fast, reliable, and accessible transit is more urgent than ever. Mayor Chow also directed staff to look into other options in time for the World Cup that will give transit users priority, such as HOV Lanes.

TTCriders is calling on City Council to support this motion as amended, committing to clear implementation timelines for completing the Bathurst and Dufferin corridors and moving forward on other long-promised RapidTO routes, including Jane Street, Finch Avenue East, Steeles Avenue, and Lawrence Avenue East.

“This was a chance to show bold leadership, and we took a huge step forward today,” said Pulsifer. “Transit riders will keep pushing to make sure this City delivers on its commitments.”
