Accessibility

Will candidates commit to a transit system accessible to all?

A truly accessible transit system means more than being able to board a bus, streetcar or subway. Riders need to be able to navigate the system, understand where they are going, safely get to and from their stop, and rely on door-to-door service when conventional transit cannot meet their needs.

For too many riders, these barriers can make taking transit more difficult, stressful, or sometimes impossible. Confusing or inconsistent signage can make the TTC harder to navigate, particularly for riders with disabilities, seniors, tourists and people who are unfamiliar with the system. For Wheel-Trans users, reliable door-to-door service can be essential to getting to work, medical appointments, school and other parts of daily life.

Over the next four years, Toronto needs to make the TTC easier to use for everyone. That means fully implementing the TTC's wayfinding strategy, protecting and expanding door-to-door Wheel-Trans service for those who need it, and ensuring accessibility is prioritized during snowstorms and other disruptions. Here's what we asked candidates:

Some candidates offered extra comments about their position on TTC accessibility:

Olivia Chow is committed to building a caring, affordable, and safer city that works for everyone. As part of that commitment, she supports making the TTC more accessible, including through improved wayfinding, Wheel-Trans service that works for disabled transit riders, and making sure that everyone can make their way on the TTC after a big snow storm. As Mayor, Olivia has invested to get results, including funding the first year of the TTC’s Wayfinding Strategy in her 2026 budget.

Accessibility is non-negotiable: fully fund the TTC’s 10-year wayfinding strategy; protect and expand door-to-door Wheel-Trans; prioritize curb clearing at Wheel-Trans, bus, and streetcar stops after snowstorms (pay for verified hours cleared, not standby theatre). I’m an engineer and Accessible Ontario pledge signatory — design the system so everyone can use it with dignity.

Depending on the budget i endorse the 10 year ttc way finding strategy but it has to make sense, i need to see the data. In terms of expansion to the door-door wheel trans service, i would also need to see the data. Whatever helps the people who would benefit from the service i am for but i would like to personally talk to them first and make sure that we are doing it right.

I will keep wheel trans as is

We need more accessible transit. It can be difficult to get around without it

The TTC is a great mover of the people in our city.  Let's make it even better, safer, more accessible and possible for everyone to ride.

I have no locked accessibility plank and will not invent one. Therefore I am not making commitments on a 10-year wayfinding plan, Wheel-Trans expansion, or snow-clearing priorities. Any TTC action must be safety-first, fiscally disciplined, and delivered competently; no invented spending or numbers.

I live in a Naturally Occurring Retirement Community and know first-hand how important transit accessibility is; that is why I will review where NORC clusters exist in Toronto to improve transit, including Wheel-Trans service, in those areas.

A truly public transit system must be accessible to everyone. Free TTC must also mean accessible TTC. I will support improvements to wayfinding, Wheel-Trans, accessible stops and stations, and emergency and winter-response measures. Accessibility should be considered from the beginning of infrastructure and technology decisions, not added afterward. I also support working directly with people with disabilities and accessibility organizations to identify barriers and measure progress.

Accessible, safe and reliable transit for everyone.

An accessible transit system is designed so that any person with mobility needs can navigate it safely and independently.
Real time information on arrivals and delays would be my main priority at transit stations. If there is a shutdown, the TTC should prioritize informing riders before they pay a fare to enter the station. I would not prioritize wayfinding and new signage.  Scarce funds cannot be spent on creating new number schemes. True accessibility means people can actually get where they need to go. Improving transit reliability must be the number one priority.
Wheel-Trans is a vital service for moving people to work, school and appointments. I'll protect and expand door-to-door service for the people who need it.
I would prioritize snow clearing at bus and streetcar stops after snowstorms.  Making transit convenient and accessible combats road congestion and maximizes the impact of our public investments.
