Job Description: Transit Rider Organizing Contractor

Start Date: Early September

TTCriders is a membership-based organization of transit users in Toronto, Ontario.

You will work with volunteers to conduct community planning activities to engage local residents and organizations about transit policy, and conduct research.

About the role

2026 is a pivotal year for transit: the development of the TTC’s three-year Ridership Growth Strategy and a municipal election year. With new investment on the line, TTCriders, in partnership with Small Change Fund, is seeking an independent contractor to provide organizing services that build rider power by recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers to take action during this crucial stage in the development of Toronto’s public transit system.

The contractor will work collaboratively with the Executive Director, volunteers, partner organizations, and other contributors to support campaign objectives and help advance victories for transit users.

Scope of work

  • Volunteer Recruitment & Leadership Development (primary focus)
  • Recruit, onboard, and retain volunteers; grow a core team of rider leaders across the city.
  • Design and deliver short trainings (deputation prep, canvassing skills, story-of-self, outreach scripts).
  • Set campaign goals and evaluate progress and outcomes
  • Track metrics (shifts, contacts, sign-ups, volunteer retention) and keep lists clean.
  • Develop and implement communications strategies including media relations, writing content for social media, website, email blasts, print, and other materials, and overseeing production of digital materials
  • Keep up to date on relevant transit policy developments
  • Other campaign-related duties as required.

Who We Are Looking For:

  • 1–3+ years of experience in community, labour, electoral, or issue-based organizing (volunteer or paid).
  • Experience working with volunteers and coalitions.
  • Strong communication skills (in person, phone/SMS, and written).
  • Proven ability to motivate and lead teams.
  • Organized and data-literate: can track goals, manage lists, and capture notes consistently.
  • Alignment with TTCriders’ mission and a commitment to equity, anti-oppression, and accessibility.
  • Previous involvement in TTCriders is an asset;
  • Familiarity with digital campaign tools (e.g. NationBuilder, NewMode, ActionButton) and social media platforms (e.g. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok) is an asset
  • Graphic design skills is an asset
  • Speaking or writing in language(s) additional to English is an asset
  • University or college degree or equivalent experience.

Contract terms

Contract period: Early September 2026 through October 30, 2026, with the possibility of extension subject to funding and organizational needs.

Compensation: $27/hour for a maximum of 35 hours per week upon submission and approval of invoices. The successful applicant will provide services as an independent contractor and will be responsible for their own tax remittances and other statutory obligations applicable to self-employed individuals.
