Protect Wheel-Trans Service

To cut costs, the TTC is forcing thousands of disabled people and seniors who rely on Wheel-Trans to re-register for the service. The TTC has an internal target to restrict 50% of current users from full "door-to-door" service.*

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) is supposed to remove barriers and expand access. Under the AODA, the TTC is expanding Wheel-Trans access to more people who have a disability -- this a positive change.

But, the provincial government has not provided funding for additional Wheel-Trans service. To cut costs, the TTC is asking thousands of current users to re-register, restricting some users from full "door-to-door" service, and forcing them onto conventional TTC streetcars, subways, and buses for parts of their trips.

People who are not able to use the conventional system will lose independence and become more isolated. Just because a trip is accessible on paper, doesn’t mean it is in reality.

Trips on the conventional TTC have gotten more crowded and less safe because Toronto's last mayor cut transit service. Service levels in off-peak times are being planned for "standing room only," which means less room for people with mobility devices to get on board.

Wheel-Trans users need choice, just like people who voluntarily use the TTC!

Re-registering for Wheel-Trans costs money and time, because a doctor's note and sometimes multiple in-person appointments are required, not to mention organizing attendant support. The appeals process is also unfair and inaccessible. Less than 0.02% of Wheel-Trans applicants appealed their status in 2017 and 2018.*

Have you been re-registered for Wheel-Trans and want to appeal? You must submit an appeal within 90 days of the decision letter you receive from Wheel-Trans.
