Platform Doors for a safer, more reliable TTC!

The TTC has a plan to implement Platform Edge Doors over several years, but it is unfunded.

Platform Edge Doors mean:

  • Prevents people from falling onto the tracks from the platform, saving lives
  • Prevents debris and other objects from falling on the tracks and posing a fire risk, preventing delays
  • Allowing trains to enter crowded subway stations at full speed, making your commute faster

Two of Toronto's busiest subway stations had plans to implement platform edge doors. Platform Edge Doors were part of initial plans to improve and expand Bloor-Yonge Station to address overcrowding. However, platform edge doors remain unfunded as part of the $1.5 billion Bloor-Yonge Capacity Improvement Project. In June 2025, Commissioners on the TTC Board also backed away from a planned pilot to install platform edge doors at TMU (formerly Dundas) Station.

Add your name to let City Council know that you support implementing platform edge doors in the TTC, starting with installations at TMU (formerly Dundas) and Bloor-Yonge Stations!

What are Platform Edge Doors?

Platform Edge Doors are physical barriers and doors between the platform and tracks that prevent objects, animals, and people from falling on the tracks. When a train arrives at a station and comes to a full stop, the Platform Edge Doors open to allow riders to board.  Platform Edge Doors are a proven solution for safer transit, and exist in modern subway systems around the world, including Paris, Hong Kong, and Montreal.

TTCriders recommended the installation of Platform Edge Doors across the system in our 2023 Rider Safety Report.

Subway service interruptions cost riders 204,900 hours per year on average. Platform Edge Doors would reduce service interruptions by 85%. Let’s make transit safe, reliable, and accessible!
