More transit service on King Street is good, but streetcars still need priority in traffic

This post will be updated as new information becomes available.

Next Wednesday, the TTC Board will consider a proposal from the TTC Service Planning staff to introduce a new 514 Cherry streetcar. The goal is to provide more streetcar service for the busiest sections of King Street. We are supportive of this proposal, but we continue to advocate that King Street should be re-designed to prioritize streetcars over private automobiles.

Since the 504 King streetcar service has been running at the limit of its physical capacity for some time, more space could mean that transit riders along the route will have access to transit service once again. It could also mean that more people can board the full King streetcar, which means we won't have many improvements to the overcrowding situation.

King Street is an area of high population density and activity; it should have exceptional transit service. This increase in capacity is good, but streetcars on King move more people than cars but are granted less space.

📸 Rally to Open the Crosstown

On February 19, 2025, TTCriders held the Rally to Open the Crosstown at Yonge and Eglinton to call for answers about the Eglinton Crosstown and Finch West LRT projects. Promised opening dates for the LRTs have come and gone, while transit costs have skyrocketed under Metrolinx. Transit riders are looking for answers and credible opening dates for the Eglinton Crosstown and Finch West LRTs.
TTCriders asked every party to invest in running TTC service and new LRTs with a 50% operating subsidy for local transit systems, and to give the TTC back control over running Toronto transit, to keep costs down and increase accountability.
