Transit riders are calling on the TTC Commission, the City and the Province to approve and fund the recommendations in a TTC staff report to improve TTC service and make fares more affordable.

Called “Opportunities to Improve Transit Service in Toronto”, the TTC staff report recommends the TTC increase bus and street car service so all routes have 10-minutes-or-better service, expand the express bus network, increase night time service, and introduce two hour transfer fares, so one fare will allow a rider to use the TTC for two hours.

“Our TTC is bulging at the seams, and riders need relief now,” says Brenda Thompson, founder of the Scarborough Transit Action organization, and member of TTCriders.  “Increasing bus and street car service will save us time and improve our commute immediately.  We say yes to the practical recommendations in this important report,” she says.

“Ever single transit rider wants to be able to get off the TTC, buy food at the supermarket, and get on the TTC again without paying twice,” says Jessica Bell, TTCriders member.  “Two hour fare transfers are a winner,” she says.

The TTC Commission will vote on these recommendations at its meeting today at City Hall.  TTCriders and friends will be deputing on the motion. If approved, the recommendations will be voted on at the next City Council meeting, which starts on August 25, 2014.

TTCriders is calling on governments to provide $700 million a year more funding to the TTC so service can be increased and fares reduced, especially for those in need.  A $700 million yearly investment in the TTC would mean the subsidy per ride would move up to the North American average. Currently, the TTC gets the LEAST amount of subsidy per ride compared to other big transit systems across North America.

Founded in 2011, TTCriders is a public transit advocacy group that campaigns for better public transit and lower fares.

📸 Rally to Open the Crosstown

On February 19, 2025, TTCriders held the Rally to Open the Crosstown at Yonge and Eglinton to call for answers about the Eglinton Crosstown and Finch West LRT projects. Promised opening dates for the LRTs have come and gone, while transit costs have skyrocketed under Metrolinx. Transit riders are looking for answers and credible opening dates for the Eglinton Crosstown and Finch West LRTs.
TTCriders asked every party to invest in running TTC service and new LRTs with a 50% operating subsidy for local transit systems, and to give the TTC back control over running Toronto transit, to keep costs down and increase accountability.
