(Toronto, Ontario) – Commuters at King Station were treated to a station makeover by volunteers from transit advocacy organization TTCriders this morning. The group installed their own signs and added stickers to existing signs and maps to make them easier to understand.
“You shouldn’t get lost while taking the TTC, but it can feel like a maze because of the confusing or outdated signs in subway stations,” said TTCriders volunteer Joe Craib. “We’re asking Toronto City Council to invest in upgrading signs and information system-wide, including up-to-date schedule information on trip planning apps and the TTC website. The TTC is creating a new wayfinding strategy, but it needs to be fully funded.”
“When thousands of international tourists visit for the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, we want them to be taking public transit. They should be able to easily navigate and be impressed with our transit system. Easy-to-use TTC information and signs will not only benefit visitors to the city, but encourage all Toronto residents to take transit again in the future.”
The Toronto Transit Commission is creating a new wayfinding strategy, but funding has not yet been allocated to make it a reality. Wayfinding refers to signage, information, and audio announcements that guide you through the transit system.
Signage installed by volunteers included detailed descriptions of streetcar routes, alphanumeric exit labels, and large signs clarifying the modes of transit served by the station. TTCriders volunteers designed new signage that reflects the following principles:
