Hands off Health Care, Hydro, Transit and Housing: Anti-Privatization Forum, Sunday, February 21

Privatization is everywhere in our city, province and across the country, whether is selling off public resources; financing and managing public projects through public/private partnerships (P3s); contracting out the public capacity to manage and oversee the operation of programs we need.

Privatization seeks to transform OUR education, health care, energy and transit into more assets for the 1% to profit from.

Transit faces a number of efforts to whittle down public control over how it is managed, maintained and developed: Management of key projects, such as the Toronto York Spadina Subway extension has been given to an US-based international corporation; New LRT projects involve P3’s in their maintenance and huge pressures to operate with the private sector; the province has mandated P3’s as the method of choice for financing and managing transit investments and there is an ongoing campaign to undermine the effectiveness of democratic forms of public control, and argue in favour of the so-called “efficiency” of the private, profit-making sector.

On Sunday, February 21st, activists from a number of campaigns challenging privatization – from Hydro One and Toronto Hydro, the Ontario Health Coalition, TTCriders and the housing movement – will talk about their strategies, issues and challenges. We will collectively compare perspectives and experiences.

Join us for a day of discussion, strategy building and deepening our own capacities to understand and challenge privatization and contribute to a common strategy to fight back and build democratic and environmentally sound alternatives to privatized management.

Free lunch will be provided. For more info, check the Facebook page. If you'd like to participate or attend, contact [email protected].

📸 Rally to Open the Crosstown

On February 19, 2025, TTCriders held the Rally to Open the Crosstown at Yonge and Eglinton to call for answers about the Eglinton Crosstown and Finch West LRT projects. Promised opening dates for the LRTs have come and gone, while transit costs have skyrocketed under Metrolinx. Transit riders are looking for answers and credible opening dates for the Eglinton Crosstown and Finch West LRTs.
TTCriders asked every party to invest in running TTC service and new LRTs with a 50% operating subsidy for local transit systems, and to give the TTC back control over running Toronto transit, to keep costs down and increase accountability.
