Finch West's Promise of Better Transit Broken

The rumblings of what Mayor Ford's new Transportation Plan to replace Transit City might look like is clearly leaving out people along Finch West, who were promised a Finch LRT. Mayor Ford's plan takes money allocated to Finch West and buries it underground along Eglinton, according to Bruce McCuaig of Metrolinx.

Anthony Perruzza, Councillor for Ward 8, has Finch West running through his ward. He knows that Finch Avenue West is at gridlock. Cars, trucks, and buses are stuck behind one another in traffic. The 36 Finch West bus is the busiest route in Toronto, leaving passengers to wait as crowded buses continue to pass them by.

This weekend 25 volunteers including students from the York Federation of Students (YFS) and Ward 8 residents knocked on 2,000 doors with Councillor Perruzza and had hundreds of letters signed in favour of the Finch West LRT.

The Toronto Sun was present and wrote a great article covering the canvass, which you can see here.

This Tuesday February 22nd, Councillor Perruzza will be holding a Town Hall meeting at 7pm in the Yorkwoods Library Theatre (1785 Finch Avenue West). You can find out more here.

Desmond Cole wrote a great article for Torontoist on January 31st predicting that Finch would be left out to feed the battle over limited money and Ford's commitment to burying public transit. You can see the article here.

📸 Rally to Open the Crosstown

On February 19, 2025, TTCriders held the Rally to Open the Crosstown at Yonge and Eglinton to call for answers about the Eglinton Crosstown and Finch West LRT projects. Promised opening dates for the LRTs have come and gone, while transit costs have skyrocketed under Metrolinx. Transit riders are looking for answers and credible opening dates for the Eglinton Crosstown and Finch West LRTs.
TTCriders asked every party to invest in running TTC service and new LRTs with a 50% operating subsidy for local transit systems, and to give the TTC back control over running Toronto transit, to keep costs down and increase accountability.
