Toronto – TTCriders is expressing outrage after learning that the Eglinton Crosstown LRT has been delayed yet again. Riders have waited more than a decade for this line, which if it opens is expected to carry over 100,000 people per day.
The Toronto Star reported that revenue service testing is paused on the Eglinton LRT after two trains collided at the Mount Dennis train yard.
“This is beyond frustrating and it’s a betrayal of public trust,” said August Puranauth, Campaigns Manager at TTCriders. “What are they actually doing here? We need a full public inquiry into what went wrong, an end to the privatization of public transit projects, and real transparency from both Metrolinx and TTC leadership. Riders deserve answers.”
TTCriders says the repeated delays show that the public-private partnership (P3) model has failed to deliver. The group is calling on the provincial government to launch a full public inquiry into the Eglinton Crosstown project to uncover the causes of the delays and cost overruns to ensure this never happens again.
Residents along Eglinton say the setbacks have had real impacts. “We’ve lived through years of construction, noise, and road closures, and now we’re told again to just wait,” said Andrew Ilersich, a local rider. “It’s insulting. People here have waited 14 years for this line to open. How much longer are we going to have to wait?”
TTCriders is demanding a clear timeline for completion, full disclosure of all outstanding issues causing delays, and a commitment to transit projects built by the public, for the public.
“Transit is a public service,” said Puranauth. “After over a decade of construction, the people who live in the community and will rely on this line deserve honesty, accountability, and a transit system that actually works.”
