The Fair Fare Coalition wants Metrolinx and the TTC to meet with us about the Presto ticket

More than forty agencies and community groups submitted a letter to Metrolinx’s Board Meeting today, warning that the Presto ticket that will replace tokens by the end of 2019 will create barriers to accessing transit.

Metrolinx and the TTC need to get this right. That's why we're asking for a public meeting about the phase out of tokens.

Metrolinx plans to make Presto tickets available at Shoppers Drug Mart and TTC stations only, cutting hundreds of sale locations. Tokens are currently available at more than 1,200 locations around Toronto, never expire, and cost $3 when purchased in bulk. Metrolinx has not confirmed whether Presto tickets will have an extra cost.

Presto tickets must retain key features of tokens, including:

  • Widely available at convenient locations throughout the city. Tokens are currently available for purchase at over 1,200 locations, including convenience stores. Presto will only be available at Shoppers Drug Mart locations and subway stations, significantly reducing access.
  • Affordable at current token or ticket concession rates, including student, senior, and low-income rates.
  • Available for bulk purchase at a discounted rate.
  • Transferable from one person to another.
  • The Presto ticket must not have an expiration date.
  • Available for purchase by cash (this is a planned feature of the Presto fare vending machines).

Letter & Survey: TTC must exchange expired tokens and tickets

Do you still have TTC tokens or paper senior/student tickets or day passes? The TTC has announced that they will stop accepting TTC tokens and paper tickets after December 31, 2024. But the TTC will not be issuing exchanges. This is unfair to people who have saved up tokens and tickets, especially low-income seniors. Gift cards and permanent stamps never expire --  why are transit fares any different?
