On March 17, 2020 the City of Toronto quietly stopped processing new applications to the Fair Pass TTC discount program.* Some current Fair Pass holders have been unable to renew.

This is completely unacceptable! Especially during a pandemic, when people are relying on the TTC for essential trips to access medical care and food. This change has caused confusion regarding who is still eligible to receive discounted fares.

As 2017 draws to a close, it’s time to recognize those who have been a strong voice for transit riders.  On behalf of TTCriders, I am proud to award Josh Matlow as our Transit Champion of the Year.  For not only is he the hardworking councillor for Ward 22 - St. Paul’s, he is one of City Council’s strongest transit advocates.

By Scarborough Transit Action This past Friday, the TTC announced that it would further modify the design plans for the Scarborough One-Stop Subway Extension in the face of pressure from car drivers and homeowners.

We knew this was coming.

Despite some folks claiming the “Scarborough Subway” is happening, we have always known that this politically-motivated proposition would be tested over, and over, and over again.  In the face of this repeated resistance, the Scarborough Subway Extension’s staunchest supporters have predictably played the same tired card: It’s downtown elites that are trying to keep Scarborough from the subway that it deserves!

The recent Toronto Transit Network report has Mayor John Tory forging ahead with Smart Track, the Eglinton West LRT, and the Scarborough Subway Extension (SSE).  Meanwhile, the Eglinton and Sheppard East LRTs appear to have been dropped from the list of priorities. (Find out more about the city's transit priorities here)

Three years ago, Toronto City Council broke its own procedures and opted to scrap a fully funded rapid transit line. If not for this egregious mistake, a 7-Stop Scarborough LRT from Kennedy through Scarborough Centre to Malvern would be under construction now.

(When we initially wrote this post we believed the Councillor Karygiannis was merely a destructive voice yelling from the margins. We have since learned that politics have transpired to make his mistaken and problematic voice relevant. We have updated the post to provide more details about the options that Councillor Karygiannis is supporting)
