(Toronto, ON) – TTCriders, a membership-based transit advocacy group, released the following statement in response to Ontario Liberal Party leader Bonnie Crombie’s uncosted promise to install platform edge doors on the TTC, starting with the busiest stations:
“Platform edge doors will make the TTC safer and more reliable by reducing service disruptions caused by people at track level and debris that can cause fires, but the doors are not a silver bullet for the TTC’s urgent service and repair needs,” said TTCriders spokesperson August Puranauth.
“The TTC has listed platform edge doors as an “aspirational project” because of its long list of unfunded repairs and upgrades, such as removing asbestos and new work cars required to do repairs and fix subway slow zones.”
Ontario needs a new transit funding model. TTCriders will be asking every party to commit to taking care of the transit infrastructure we already have, transit operations funding, and investing in Toronto's plans for an Eglinton East LRT and Waterfront East LRT.”
